Our Unit

A unique opportunity exists to join the University of Newcastle as we embark on enhancing our strategic footing for the future. With the announcement of the Australian Universities Accord that will drive transformative reform across the Higher Education system, we are exploring avenues to further enhance our support for students and refine our operational practices to continue to better serve our region.

The University is standing up a program of work to identify where we can gain efficiencies and improve our effectiveness as an institution. Led by our Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Excellence), Professor Jennifer Milam, the Performance Excellence team, will support the coordinated implementation of institutional strategic priorities, and large change initiatives, preparing the University to be a sustainable institution well into the future.

The team will define a path of performance excellence derived from a holistic approach and a collaborative culture that will sustain our world-class learning experience for students and support a high-performing research-intensive university.

The Team is responsible for providing resources, insights, and specialised support in the areas of project and change management, communications, and data-informed strategic insights.

The Communication Manager, Major Projects is responsible for conceptualising, developing and implementing key strategic project communications and engagement strategies to deliver the priorities of the University. The role provides advice to senior stakeholders and operates with a high level of autonomy. The successful candidate with focus on internal communications and engagement strategies aligned with, Academic Excellence initiatives, and the Service Excellence Program.

This role will lead a small team of project and internal communications specialists responsible for delivering University’s staff communications.


How will you inspire us?

Reporting to the Program Director, Performance Excellence, the successful candidate will have the strategic leadership skills to lead a team in the development and delivery of institution-wide communication initiatives and staff engagement. 

You will have:

  •  Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or extensive management experience and proven management expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability to manage high performing teams to deliver exceptional outcomes. 
  • Proven experience in developing and leading internal communication strategies to improve staff engagement,
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, ability to build trust with senior executives and a strong track record preparing strategic communications advice and materials.
  • Highly-developed analytical and problem-solving skills with the capacity to think creatively, act strategically and manage change in a large complex organisation while effectively managing stakeholder expectations, issues and risks.
  • Demonstrated high-level facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to manage challenging relationships, gain consensus and influence outcomes.
