Join the University of Newcastle’s finance team as the Manager – Financial Accounting (Corporate Accounting), applying your expertise in technical accounting and leading our corporate accounting team. You will collaborate with diverse stakeholders, delivering financial reporting and insights that support strategic decision-making in our large, multi-entity organisation.

Key responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Associate Director, Corporate Accounting and Treasury, your key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and coach a team of five, fostering growth and delivering exceptional outcomes.
  • Provide guidance on Australian Accounting Standards, tax compliance, and best-practice accounting controls to support the operations of the University and its controlled entities.
  • Deliver month-end and year-end close processes, including statutory reporting for the University and its controlled entities.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors to ensure the completion of accurate financial statements and compliance with reporting obligations.
  • Collaborate with Finance Business Partners and the management teams of controlled entities to understand financial needs, delivering tailored advice and actionable insights.
  • Contribute as a subject matter expert to high-impact projects aligned with the University's strategic goals.

This full-time role is based at our Callaghan Campus on Awabakal and Worimi land, with hybrid work opportunities available.

About you:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Post-graduate qualifications in accounting (CAANZ or CPA) or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive financial accounting experience and the ability to apply technical accounting expertise to a broad range of operational matters.
  • Ability to lead a small team, building their capability and delivering exceptional outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strategic insight and the ability to navigate complex organisational structures.
  • Knowledge of best-practice accounting controls and their application in a large, multifaceted organisation.
  • Commitment to cultivating a safe, equitable, and diverse workplace.
  • Experience using TechnologyOne or similar is desirable.

  • You must have ongoing work rights in Australia, as visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
