Queensland Hydro was established by the Queensland Government to deliver long-duration pumped hydro energy storage projects so we can transition to a stable renewable energy future.

Pumped hydro energy storage has a critical role in helping to meet the Queensland Government’s renewable energy targets and Australia’s Towards Net Zero goals by 2050. Queensland Hydro’s proposed pumped hydro energy storage projects can deliver the ultimate assurance for the State’s energy transition and play a defining role in securing a stable transition to renewable energy. 

Purpose

The Project Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor role for the Pioneer Burdekin Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project will play an important role in ensuring good health, safety, environmental and cultural heritage management practices are implemented on site. 

This position will be on a 12-month max term contract and will have a blend of technical proficiency and interpersonal skills. The role reports to the Senior Project Manager and the Project Health and Safety Manager and is highly skilled in auditing, Risk Management, Incident Investigation and Behavioral Safety.

As a key partner, the role works collaboratively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to enable the delivery of a safe, cost-effective project ensuring the health and safety of employees, contractors and the communities in which Queensland Hydro operate.

The role

The Project Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor’s key accountabilities are to:

  • Undertake site-based assurance activities focusing on both health, safety and environmental compliance, to ensure good management practices are in place, drive continuous improvement and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review Contractor (s) documentation against project requirements and obligations including but not limited to reviewing contractor SWMS and procedures. 
  • Liaise with Queensland Hydro Project Managers, Field Services Manager and other on-site representatives to ensure understanding and compliance with Project health, safety, environmental and cultural heritage requirements. 
  • Review Contractor incident reporting from site. 
  • Review Contractor incident investigations to ensure adequate investigations are being undertaken, which identify root causes and adequate corrective actions and assist with incident investigations conducted by Queensland Hydro.
  • Ensure Contractors implement corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Ensure any relevant safety or environmental learnings are shared within Queensland Hydro. 
  • Play a positive role in supporting Queensland Hydro’s safety culture, which involves promoting and demonstrating safe behaviors and practices, identifying continuous improvement opportunities, and identifying hazards and unsafe acts. 
  • Engage in risk activities and reviews to address key risks, issues and specific activities which may have an impact on the Project.
  • Support the implementation of Queensland Hydro’s H&S Management System and Environmental Management System.
  • Assist in inducting project staff. This may include the development and delivery of toolbox sessions or similar.
  • Champion a culture of health, safety and environmental responsibility within the project framework.

About you

  • Relevant Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Health and Safety or Environmental Science or Environmental management
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in similar role in civil construction, utilities or related industry
  • Highly developed influencing & negotiation skills  
  • Proven ability to build productive, collaborative and cooperative relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, to encourage innovation and ensure best practice
  • Extensive knowledge of WHS and environmental legislation including Codes of Practices and AS/NZS ISO.
  • Proven ability to facilitate risk assessments, incident investigations, and audit activities.
  • Strong track record in critical risk and control management in a high-risk environment.
  • Be competent and proficient with the Microsoft Office suite.
