About the Position
Brisbane City Council is seeking an accomplished and commercially savvy Manager, Waste Strategy and Planning to lead the strategic direction of Waste and Resource Recovery Services (WaRRS). This role is central to driving the city’s ambitious waste reduction and resource recovery strategy, with the ultimate goal of zero avoidable waste to landfill for Brisbane. You will lead and align the team to optimise business and contract performance and manage complex projects to enhance the Branch’s commercial outcomes.
Waste and Resource Recovery Services (WaRRS) is a commercially focused branch within the City Standards Group, dedicated to delivering efficient waste management and resource recovery services to Brisbane’s residents and businesses while achieving waste reduction targets. The branch manages some of the largest waste contracts in the Southern Hemisphere, providing over 32 million bin services annually to households and processing more than 1.2 million customer transactions each year through its Resource Recovery Centres.
As a forward-thinking leader, you will leverage your extensive experience in strategic planning to meet regulatory standards, anticipate industry trends, and drive sustainability and waste reduction goals. With strong commercial acumen, you will deliver measurable improvements in performance and efficiency through effective leadership. A strategic thinker, you will collaborate across all organisational areas to achieve optimal community outcomes, driving collective success while ensuring alignment with our overarching goals. You will focus on delivering initiatives that promote an agile organisation, strategically directing resources to key priorities, including frontline services.
To be considered, you must have the following:
- in-depth knowledge of waste management, policy, and sustainable project delivery
- experience in strategic planning to meet regulations, anticipate trends, and drive sustainability goals
- proven ability to apply commercial acumen in contract management, budgeting, and resource allocation to achieve waste recovery targets
- strong program management skills, delivering policy outcomes aligned with organisational goals
- success in building relationships with stakeholders to foster collaboration and alignment with objectives
- strong written communication skills for reports, board papers, and briefings; and
- proven leadership in building high-performance teams and managing workforce planning.
