Department

Alfred Health’s Allied Health comprises a number of Allied Health disciplines who provide patient centred care across all clinical programs that operate at Alfred Health. The Allied Health team includes clinicians from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Orthoptics, Speech Pathology, Social Work, Spiritual Care, Dietetics and Psychology (including Neuropsychology) and are supported by Allied Health Assistants. The Allied Health team now also includes Disability Liaison Officers. The Allied Health team works closely with the Nursing and Medical teams to provide a comprehensive and timely service to both in patients and outpatients.

Position Summary

Allied Health Research Assistant The Research Assistant will provide research support to research projects in Allied Health at Alfred Health and undertake activities that support the Professors of Allied Health, Allied Health Clinician Research Fellows and the Allied Health Research professional practice pillar. A key focus area for this role will be to support the Allied Health BED SWAP Research Program. Allied Health BED SWAP Research Program will develop evidence on the efficacy, feasibility, acceptability and utility of allied health therapy delivered via bed-substitution models of care in three priority patient groups by:

  • Developing novel treatment pathways for which allied health treatments, provided when and to-whom to reduce inpatient admissions and length of stay
  • Testing an optimised treatment protocol that tailors allied health treatment along the acute-sub-acute pathway, overcoming the current “one-size-fits-all” approach
  • Collecting biomarkers beyond clinician perception to determine the utility of bed-substitution decisionmaking

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Bachelor or Masters level degree (health sciences, allied health professional entry-to-practice, or similar) with basic research training
  • Interest in hospital-based health services research
  • Acute and/or sub-acute inpatient clinical experience

Desirable:

  • Interest in gerontology, health literacy and/or improving care transitions
  • Demonstrated experience in research, clinical audit, or health-related projects, including, recruiting research participants, collecting data and managing data and basic quantitative data analysis
  • Capacity to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders, including clinicians, researchers and other relevant organisations.
