We are currently seeking a Site Project Leader, Safety Always to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Vanimo, Wewak or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the Superintendent – Health & Safety.   

the Site Project Leader, Safety Always is responsible for ensuring all personnel (employees, contractors, and approved visitors) are aware and adhere to all Safety requirements at SGCL and a strong and conscious safety practices are implemented. The role ensures that St Barbara “Safety Always” project is implemented, promoted and supported across site to achieve a strong positive safety culture.

 The opportunity

 Technical accountabilities

 Safety

  • Responsible for managing, directing and planning one, but occasionally more than one, safety project and may consist of project teams or support team members
  • Responsible for coordinating, scheduling and assigning safety project tasks, team building, maintaining working relationships with other departments outside of HSS
  • Manage and direct teams to meet safety project objectives
  • Organizes and guides site operations using methodologies accepted by St Barbara
  • Direct teams of HSS specialists within SGCL
  • Develops project schedule and plans including system analysis, technical data, support equipment and training device facilities requirements etc
  • Provide input to determine complex safety project scope schedule and budget baselines based on an understanding of the project outcome
  • Ensure other departments have access to accurate current reports and the relevant Safety Project reports are available for the company.

People 

  • Develops Health systems/processes for team members through deliberate regular feedback, coaching and support formal training.
  • Provides appropriate recommendations to the Health & Safety Superintendent and HSS Manager on people decisions in line with formal process, best work practices and St Barbara values.
  • Support the leading of a diverse work team with effective people management skills/techniques.
  • Takes an active role in promoting the training, development, and succession of national and local staff.
  • Creates opportunities for people to work together to enable them to contribute to the business and learn from each other.

People

 Production

  • Establish the standards, procedures and systems for all work tasks and ensure these are effective in the achievement of site targets.
  • Upkeep of the Safety Always program of St Barbara.
  • Develop, monitor, and report on systems to track effectiveness (KPI monitoring) of training with HR Training.
  • Review and improve systems based on the monitoring, reporting, training and improvement ideas of direct reports and teams.
  • Ensure month end reports are submitted to the Health, Safety and Security Manager.
  • Complete and communicate on at least a monthly basis on KPI tracking to the Health, Safety and Security Manager.

Cost

  • Delivers work within approved budget managing any variances in accordance with escalation process.
  • Actively seeks and supports the Safety Superintendent and HSS Manager to lead cost reduction opportunities through initiatives internally and cross functional.

Technical accountabilities

  • Works in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, St Barbara Management System, and all departmental operating procedures.
  • Scheduling and leading all Project Team meetings.
  • Scheduling and handling logistics for all Safety Always, Care Behaviours and other sessions.
  • Identifying obstacles and adjusting and maintaining Project Plans Maintaining “3W” lists and holding others accountable for delivering on their action items.
  • Coordinate and communicate team activities
  • Identify and communicate project issues, risks and opportunities
  • Collaborate with project team to complete all project deliverables on schedule
  • Facilitate decisions regarding project scope, resources and schedule
  • Execute on all change activities
  • Provide facilitation expertise and coaching to other facilitators.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • 5+ years relevant work experience in similar leadership roles essentially in large-scale mining/mineral processing operations.
  • Proficient in English with excellent verbal, written communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Proficient in knowledge and experience with application of PNG HS acts and legislation.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Sound planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Understands and implements solid work management processes through utilisation of tools that drives and achieves performance.
  • Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building, conflict resolution & training
  • An excellent knowledge of Safety, Security, Emergency Response and Risk systems and proven experience in establishing and implementing systems
  • An excellent knowledge of Behavioural Change Programs and applications.
  • Competent in facilitation of training programs.
  • Ability to make efficient position-related decisions.
  • To be able to have impact and influence on non-positional people.
  • Results oriented that can operate with site-wide prioritisation.
  • A team player who can work both as a customer and a supplier.
  • Can act as a change agent. A belief that the National workforce can be developed.
