We are currently seeking a Senior Mine Engineer to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Superintendent Mine Technical Services, the Senior Mine Engineer - Production Planning, is responsible for supervision of the short term (< 3 Mths) mine engineering and mine planning activities, ensuring Simberi Operations adheres to the site business plans and strategy to realise maximum return for the asset. The role will also provide technical and processional leadership and support to the Simberi Operations, which will be consistent with the Company’s Vision, Values and Policies.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities

  • Safety leader within the Mine Technical Services (MTS) and Simberi Operations
  • Ensure safe work practices, own health and safety and all other workers by identifying hazards and ensuring issues and risks are reported and addressed.
  • Develop and maintain a suite of fit-for-purpose systems, processes, and procedures within the Production Planning team at Simberi Operations.
  • Ensure the mining engineering team produces timely, optimised, and accurate short term mine plans that include all mining activities.
  • Ensure blast designs, tie ups and charging plans along with the 2 weekly drilling schedules are produced accurately and when expected.
  • Develop and maintain Drill and blast QAQC systems and processes.
  • Provide technical support to the Drill & Blast operations team.
  • Lead the team to provide timely and accurate tracking, reporting, and analysis of daily, weekly, and monthly mining related production data.
  • Propose, develop and drive continuous improvement within the Mine Technical Services and Mining departments.
  • Coach, mentor and train the mine engineering team to ensure tasks are consistently completed to a high standard and provide a consistently high level of support to mining operations.
  • Coordinate or participate in major mining projects associated with MTS, Mining Operations and Contractors.
  • Maintain effective, respectful and constructive communication and interaction with Mining Operations, Site Leadership team and other key stake holders.

Drill and Blast Accountabilities

  • Coordinate the planning and design of blast holes, tie ups and charging plans as required and provide technical support to the Drill & Blast Team.
  • Ensure that the Production Planning team provides a high level of design and scheduling of drill and blast operations in line with the short and medium term mine plans and integrate this work with other planning and operational areas.
  • Actively engage with the Drill & Blast mine operations team to communicate designs and plans to ensure that the drill & blast processes are optimised.

Mine Scheduling accountabilities

  • Ensuring that long term plans for Simberi assets derived from St Barbara LOM Strategic and business plans, realise maximum return on asset
  • Ensure all plans and schedules (Forecasts and LOMs) are released to the group in a timely manner
  • Meet the milestones required during the annual planning cycle

People accountabilities

  • Coordinate resources for the effective delivery of all production planning requirements
  • Coach, mentor and train the mine engineering team to ensure tasks are consistently completed to a high standard to ensure that mining operations can meet targets and operate efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide direction and leadership for mining engineers, graduate engineers and others

We would love to hear from you if you have:

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Ability to produce a PNG National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes
  • Current unencumbered Papua New Guinea’s ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence
  • A degree qualification in mining engineering or related discipline
  • At least eight (8) years’ experience in the mining industry, with appropriate experience in Open Pit mining.
  • Experienced user of mine design, drill and blast and scheduling software
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Effective multitasking skills and the ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent analytical and teamwork skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as well as good organizational and administrative skills.

 Desirable

  • Experience as a Senior Engineer in Open Pit drill & blast and/or mine planning
  • Experience using Deswik software highly desirable.
  • A Shot Firers permit and Explosive handling certification.
  • Knowledge of the PNG Mine Safety Act and Regulations
  • Ability to lead a group of technical professionals
