We are currently seeking a Senior Mine Geologist to join our team in a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Geology Superintendent, the purpose of this role is to actively contribute to and ensure geological data is provided to the Planning and Mining Departments for mine design and production planning in a timely and accurate manner at St Barbara's Simberi Operations to ensure production objectives are achieved. Assist Geology Superintendent to build and improve grade control systems and procedures. Actively be involved in training and development of Mine and Graduate Geologists to build a strong and motivated team 

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Ensuring safety in the workplace by identifying and addressing hazards, participating in improving safety and ensuring all hazards, issues or other safety matters are recorded and reported.
  • Supporting and abiding by the desired culture across the Company.
  • Ensuring all tasks are carried out in an environmentally sustainable manner.
  • Demonstrate confidence with effective communication and decision-making pertaining to all operational aspects within the Geology Department and in discussions across Engineering and Operations.
  • Grade Control Modelling: Demonstrate a good geological understanding of the orebody to produce accurate grade control models and ore dig block plans to schedule for planning requirements and ore delivery to the mill.
  • QAQC: Demonstrate a sound knowledge of geology QAQC requirements and actively carry out such processes across assay analysis and import, RC drilling and sampling activities, in-pit post blast and wall mapping, ore mining activities and dilution control. Track and report QAQC data for daily, weekly & monthly requirements.
  • Drillhole Planning & Design: Ensure RC GC drill planning is synchronized with mine plan. Maintain and update the short to medium term drill schedule. Design and produce layouts to standard for grade control drilling as required. Ensure design of optimal drill programs to provide accurate delineation of economic mineralisation and potential extension of economic mineralisation amenable to mining at Simberi. Attention to detail and flexibility required due to dynamic mining environment. Track and report RC drilling activities for daily, weekly & monthly requirements.
  • Mapping: Supervise and drive post blast and wall mapping of benches by the Mine and Graduate Geologists. Ensure designated KPI requirements are met for both quality and quantity standards. Provide training as required.
  • Provide effective communication at daily production and mine to mill meetings.
  • Ensure RC GC planning and designs are provided to Planning for 2-Weekly Production Plan. Provide input into Weekly Mill Feed Blend Plan.
  • Provide supervision of the technician team to ensure regular flow and processing of RC chip sampling and dispatch, plus stockpile and wall sampling as required.
  • Analyse and compile required EOM reconciliation performance metrics and provide variance commentary as required.
  • Analyse and compile required EOM Mining Physicals and RC drilling performance metrics and provide variance commentary as required.
  • Ability to develop 3D Geological Interpretations/Models using geological software.
  • Sound computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications

 

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Close and frequent communication with Operations to stay informed of activities in all mining areas.
  • Be aware of the planned future status of mining areas to ensure grade control activities are ahead of production fronts.
  • Be able to make timely decisions using sound judgement that does not always require upwards consultation.
  • Maintain constant and clear communication with Technical Services and Operations teams.

Essential

  • Current unencumbered Driver’s Licence
  • A degree qualification in Geology or related discipline
  • At least 8 years relevant work experience
  • Experience in working with different types and styles of gold deposits
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and to lead the team as required
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines on multiple tasks
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals

 Desirable

  • Previous experience on a Senior level
  • Leadership Development training
