Depot Manager – Leadership Role in Transport Operations

We are seeking a proactive and results-driven Depot Manager to oversee and lead all depot activities for our dynamic transport operations. This is a key leadership role where you’ll be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and on-time departure of buses, managing depot staff, upholding high standards of safety and compliance, and driving continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Management: Lead a high-performing depot team, ensuring alignment with company values and performance goals. Directly manage supervisors and administrators to meet operational targets.
  • Depot Operations: Oversee day-to-day activities at the depot, ensuring buses depart safely and on time, while maintaining compliance with key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time running, reliability, and safety standards.
  • Safety & Compliance: Maintain depot compliance with operational, safety, and environmental standards, conducting regular safety audits and implementing improvements to mitigate risk.
  • Performance Monitoring: Regularly review depot performance data (e.g., safety incidents, lateness, complaints) and implement corrective actions to meet contract KPIs.
  • Industrial Relations & Workforce Engagement: Manage relationships with the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) and foster a collaborative, engaged workforce through effective communication, performance management, and staff recognition.
  • Financial Management: Manage the depot’s profit and loss, identifying opportunities to improve financial performance, particularly through efficient labour management and cost control.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership, planning teams, contractors, suppliers, and community groups.

About You:

  • Leadership Experience: Proven ability to lead and develop teams, including managing performance, resolving complex people issues, and motivating staff to achieve operational goals.
  • Transport Operations Expertise: Strong background in transport and logistics management, with the ability to ensure the efficient running of all depot activities.
  • Problem Solver: Able to think on your feet, handle complex issues, and make critical decisions in a high-pressure environment.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Sound understanding of industry regulations, including driver fatigue management and legislative compliance.
  • Industrial Relations: Experience managing industrial relations and working collaboratively with unions to ensure smooth operations.
  • Analytical & IT Skills: Competent in using Microsoft Office, Business Intelligence Software, and internal systems to track performance and manage depot operations.

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in business, transport, or a related field (or substantial relevant experience).
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing a team of direct reports.
  • Ability to negotiate and manage industrial relations effectively.
  • Current medium rigid driver’s license (MR) and Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
