Our school
The School of Environmental and Life Sciences is one of five Schools within the College of Engineering Science and Environment. As the largest School in the College, the School of Environmental and Life Sciences (SELS) offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The School maintains numerous internationally significant research activities with substantial numbers of higher degree research students, as well as excellent research facilities.
The Discipline of Chemistry contributes to the Bachelor of Science by offering 2 majors in Chemistry (Advanced Materials) and Chemistry (Medicinal and Organic) while also providing service teaching for other degree programs. The Discipline is highly research active, contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the School and College, reflected in the 2024 QS Rankings for Chemistry in which the University of Newcastle was ranked globally in the 251-300 band.

The Discipline of Chemistry is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in computational and/or synthetic organic chemistry to take a leading role in establishing a sustainable research program at the interface of computational and synthetic chemistry. The current specific areas of research interest include molecular organic synthesis, cheminformatics, machine learning, computational biological chemistry, chemical biology and drug design.
How will you inspire us
Primarily based within the Discipline of Chemistry, the successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate teaching in key areas of computational and synthetic chemistry as well as first year courses in general chemistry. This role will also require someone with a research track record commensurate with experience and a clear vision for evolving a successful future research and innovation portfolio.
The successful candidates will have:
- Completed a doctoral qualification in computational and synthetic organic chemistry or related area.
- Demonstrated record of publication or non-traditional research output in high-quality outlets including evidence of international and national research collaborations and/partnerships.
- Demonstrated recent ability to achieve national recognition in the discipline and taking chief investigator role in applications for external research funds.
- Skills in active supervision of Honours, Masters and/or Higher Degree by Research postgraduate research projects.
- Demonstrated recent ability to undertake high quality teaching as indicated by internal and external surveys and outcomes for students.
- Demonstrated recent ability to contribute at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels, taking responsibility for the preparation and delivery of course modules and coordinating one or more courses.
- Ability to efficiently perform allocated internal roles, sharing academic service responsibilities, contributing to outcomes of internal committees and developing external collaborations.
