Are you passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education and have a knack for creating engaging content? The College of Engineering, Science and Environment at University of Newcastle is seeking a dynamic and creative Science, Maths and Real Technology (SMART) Education Officer. This role is perfect for former teachers with strong communication skills and experience in developing educational content, looking to inspire young minds aged 8-12. 

Your role will encompass:

This fixed term position is part time 2-3 days per week until January 2025 at a HEW 6 Higher Education Level located at Callaghan Campus and servicing the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas.

About the Unit  

The SMART (Science, Maths and Real Technology) Program together with the Science and Engineering Challenge are the College of Engineering, Science and Environment’s two flagship outreach programs, focused on inspiring primary and high school students to consider a career in STEM. The SMART Program is a not-for-profit initiative established by the University in 1998.

The SMART Program develops high quality STEM workshops and Science Shows, and delivers these activities at the University, online, and in school and community settings. SMART has a complex operational environment, employing and mentoring undergraduate students as casual SMART Presenters to support activity delivery, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders including industry, schools and libraries.

  1. A degree in science, engineering, education, or related discipline; or subsequent relevant work experience; or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  2. Outstanding and demonstrated organisational skills with a proven ability to deal with multiple tasks, manage projects effectively, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  3. High level presentation, public speaking, and facilitation skills with proven ability to adapt communication styles and engage effectively with diverse groups.
  4. High level written and verbal communication skills, with capacity to prepare documents / presentations / reports, communicate plans and maintain accurate records, with high attention to detail.
  5. Proven ability to work with initiative and minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
  6. Knowledge of, and experience in adhering to workplace policies and procedures in the areas of work health safety, equity, diversity and promoting a respectful workplace culture.
  7. Must possess or be willing to obtain a (paid) Working with Children Check (WWCC) and a First Aid Certificate and undergo a National Police Check.
  8. Current ‘C’ class (car) driver's license (minimum

Desirable but not Essential:

  • Science communication or education qualifications would be highly regarded.
  • Previous educational activity development or design experience
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Knowledge of NSW K-6 Science and Technology Syllabus and related learning areas
  • Professional experience with social media and with robotics and/or visual coding languages such as Scratch, EV3 Lego Mindstorms, etc would be an advantage
