Corporate Accountant
Join the University of Newcastle’s Corporate Accounting team and play a key role in financial management and strategic decision-making.
We are seeking a Corporate Accountant to take ownership of the financial accounting responsibilities for one of the University’s controlled entities while also providing financial accounting services for the broader corporate accounting team. In this role, you will ensure accurate financial reporting, support budgeting and forecasting, and provide insights that drive effective decision-making.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager – Financial Accounting (Corporate Accounting), you will:
- Manage month-end and year-end close procedures, including statutory reporting for the University and its controlled entities.
- Perform general ledger reconciliations, intercompany reconciliations, and group accounting, including consolidation adjustments and related party transactions.
- Manage the budgeting and forecasting process, ensuring accurate financial planning and supporting leaders in meeting financial targets.
- Prepare GST, FBT, and Payroll Tax reports for submission to the ATO and State Revenue Offices.
- Provide financial insights and reports using tools such as Excel, Power BI, XLOne, and SQL.
- Support internal and external audits through the preparation of financial reports and working papers.
- Lead or participate in projects to improve financial processes and internal controls.
This full-time role is based at our Callaghan Campus on Awabakal and Worimi land, with hybrid work flexibility (up to 40% work-from-home).
About You
This role is ideal for a technically strong accountant with experience in either public practice or a large, complex organisation.
You will bring:
- A degree in business, accounting, or a related field, (or equivalent experience).
- Strong technical accounting skills, including the application of accounting standards to new business activities, month-end close processes, and tax compliance (FBT and GST).
- Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey financial concepts to non-finance stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently with broad direction, including managing and executing ad-hoc projects using project management skills.
- Ability to generate a strong sense of team spirit and collaboration within and across teams.
- A commitment to fostering a safe and respectful workplace.
Desirable:
- Working towards or intending to complete a postgraduate qualification
- Membership (or working towards membership) of CAANZ, CPA, or ACCA.
- Strength in a technical area such as internal controls, cash flow forecasting, or group accounting.
