Job Description
The Materials Planner I is responsible to support the Material Master database, BOM data, and Material Planning Schedule in ARAS and IFS. It is expected that the role will develop the person to become in-depth cognizant in the areas of material master data and product structure creation, material integration, MRP and demand-supply forecasts, and other material planning assignments.
The role is also responsible for liaising with engineering, SCM, sub-contractors, suppliers, detail planning and production, and other stakeholders, to ensure that the materials and BOM data are executable with regards to sequence of work, schedule, budget, and correct resources assigned. The role will require involvement in material availability planning, scheduling and work packaging, in support of program milestones and financial goals.
Scope and Complexity:
The position scope includes the development of all material master data, BOM structures, and demand forecasts for procurement and production work packages. The position requires the implementation of a material master data and configuration that supports defined vessel build strategy and is incorporated into material and production work package schedules and budgets.
This role is complex due to the integrated nature and scope of shipbuilding activities. The role requires the capability to accurately reflect defined build strategies in production work packages for the creation of material master data and support structures, in support of program milestones and financial goals. Errors or omissions may lead to production delays and inefficiencies.
Communications:
The Material Planner role requires extensive internal communications during project definition, scheduling, budgeting and work package development. Significant communication with Engineering, SCM, Detail Planning, Production Control and Program Office is required to accurately reflect the established build strategy in all schedules and work packages, as well as to ensure production methods and processes are accurately incorporated into work packages and supported by material data and structures. In depth technical knowledge to communicate and influence relative to the build strategy is vital.
The Material Planner also communicates externally with subcontractors and suppliers in the areas of material data structures and system design. The role will need to have an understanding of scope of supply and operation of respective systems to support material planning activates. This role will also be required to communicate with industry peers globally as required, to include shipbuilding Class organization and material standard societies. External communications are focused on reviewing and implementing material planning best practices and require an in depth technical knowledge combined with a good level of tact and diplomacy.
Duties/Accountabilities
• Utilizes build strategy output (block breakdown, erection sequence, zone definition, and block, grand block and test strategies) to develop detailed BOM in the MRP system for planning and production. The BOM will include material information, material master data and material structures for production execution
• Coordinates sub-contractor and tier 1 input into material database, BOM work instructions and work packages, to reflect preferred production methods and processes
• Schedules material data management and BOM inputs within windows defined by the Program office (milestone, key event and zone schedules) to ensure Production and Program are aligned and in sync
• Input of material master data, BOM’s, structures of material work package by schedules and budgets into our clients MRP system
• Input of material demand forecasts based on project schedules and required dates; coordinate project demand-supply with SCM Demand Planning and Production Controls
• Assist in developing the vessel’s material ordering schedule with demand data and dates for technical information in support of the design schedule and in-yard equipment need dates
Education and Experience
• A bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering or possessing strong technical background. MRP/Materials Management Certificate combined with sufficient employment experience may be considered
• 1+ year experience in material planning at engineering or manufacturing firm is highly desired. Experience in the shipbuilding industry is a plus
• Experience in Part Catalog within Engineering/technical industry is a plus
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
• Good knowledge of shipbuilding operations with a detailed understanding of the relationship between engineering, procurement, detail design, and production operations
• Understanding schedules generated by independent planning systems including IFS MRP, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project
• Understanding and able to interpret outputs from CAD/CAM software suite including ShipConstructor (preferred), AutoCAD, or Cadmatic
• Experience using an ERP/MRP system in a large manufacturing environment
• Knowledge of EVMS principles and their application in monitoring, reporting and controlling work activities
• Strong problem solving skills, analytical abilities and interpersonal skills
