Job Description

The Planner I, Deck Plate is responsible for review, modification, and preparation of planned production scope within the Steel, Pipe, Electrical, and Mechanical disciplines. The Planner will interact with the Production Scheduling, Production Control, and Change Planning Teams to assure all Planned, Scheduled, and Released Shop Orders are able to be executed on the production floor. The shop order content modification, drawing, and sequence review will support the immediate and evolving requirements of the ship’s construction, critical path, testing, and completion.


Duties/Accountabilities 

  • Develop/Modify complete production work packages that include additional production information, material lists, and work instructions required for production execution.
  • Coordinates trade input into work instructions and work packages to reflect preferred production methods and processes. 
  • Review and modify/correct job budget/duration, drawing dimensions, work instruction, work center readiness, material requirements.
  • Provide input on defined production scope included in shop orders, work instruction, and drawings.
  • Ensures that all information required by production to commence work is available prior to start.
  • Liaises with various key stakeholders within production and participates in daily integrated production team meetings providing feedback and information whenever necessary.
  • Investigates the causes of issues and delays in production and expedites all necessary activities to eliminate them.
  • Investigate cross discipline predecessor scope to enable work center readiness
  • Reviews drawing revision to assure change incorporation prior to production start.


Additional Steel Duties/Requirements:

  • Review and re-package shop orders to support cold outfitting critical paths.
  • Drives schedule requirements for fabricated assemblies in plan.
  • Reviews weld details and dimensions to assure workability 


Education and Experience 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Trades Certificate combined with sufficient employment experience is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in production, planning and/or production control at a large manufacturing firm, preferably in the shipbuilding industry.
  • Discipline specific education or experience is highly desirable


Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies 

  • Extensive knowledge of shipbuilding operations and/or discipline specific experience
  • Proficiency using ERP/MRP (IFS Preferred)
  • Proficiency working with CAD/CAM software suite including Ship Constructor (preferred) and AutoCAD. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical abilities, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong customer service focus.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and integrity.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and problem solve.
  • Good judgment and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to work with limited direction and to function as a key team member.
