An exciting opportunity has become available for a Water Quality Analyst with a background in Microbiology, Phycology, Parasitology or Genomics to join the Customer Experience team within Sydney Water. 

We are the largest dedicated water and wastewater laboratory in the southern hemisphere with Tier 1 quality in our laboratory and field performance. This allows us to provide the highest level of assurance to the community of Sydney Water’s quality product. 

We undertake sampling and analysis across all products, such as source water, drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, environmental waters (i.e. river, beaches, ocean sediments), stormwater, biosolids, sludges, grit & screenings. 

About the role 

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager you will perform routine and non-routine analyses of samples from a variety of environments, using a range of equipment in accordance with procedures to meet customer quality and time expectations and regulatory and operational requirements. 

Daily duties include receiving and processing of samples, analysis of results, data entry, quality control, checks and calibrations, maintaining sterilization laboratory. 

  • Routine biological analysis of water and wastewater products in accordance with procedures. This includes identification and enumeration of bacteria, bacteriophages, Cryptosporidium oocyst & Giardia cysts and Virus detection via cell culture and PCR. 
  • Sample preparation, extraction, concentration and analysis of water and wastewater products in accordance with procedures 
  • Identify problems and undertake problem solving appropriate to level 
  • Check relevant data entry for accuracy, report unusual results and issues immediately to a Supervisor, Team Leader or Manager 
  • Ability and willingness to learn new tasks, methods, instruments and equipment, as appropriate 
  • Complete tasks on time, to expected quality and at the expected cost 
  • Work cooperatively with team members to ensure customer requirements are met and operations are efficient 

About you 

This is a laboratory-based role requiring a team member who can undertake analysis of samples, which may include water, soil, sediment, and spoil with the following skills: 

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Biology/Science or minimum one-year experience within a related scientific discipline 
  • Ability to use computers and tablets and associated software, including Microsoft Windows and Office and various mobile devices. 
  • Ability to learn computer software packages used within a laboratory (e.g. Lab Information Management System,) 
  • Knowledge and commitment to NATA accreditation AS/ISO17025 and ISO 9001 requirements. 
  • Strong Ability to multitask & prioritise and work within a fast-paced team that has a high-volume sample through-put. 
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Knowledge of handling and storage of potentially hazardous materials.
