Sydney is expanding rapidly, and Sydney Water needs to provide the infrastructure and services necessary to meet the needs of the Greater Sydney Region. This expansion includes water and wastewater treatment plants, pipelines, and reservoirs but also extensive technological and digital upgrades and innovative ways to use water and wastewater. These complex programs require exceptional people to help ensure the successful delivery of these high-profile programs.

This 12-month role involves providing timely and high-quality legal advice to Sydney Water, focusing on digital projects.

The role requires interaction with Sydney Water’s regulators and with Sydney Water’s stakeholders, which can influence Sydney Water’s operations.

The position will advocate for Sydney Water to drive the best results for customers, communities, and the environment and to implement programs and initiatives with the customer and community in mind. 


Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head of Legal and Company Secretariat/General Counsel in providing high-quality commercial legal advice, with a focus on Digital projects and Digital operations at Sydney Water.
  • Draft, negotiate, and advise on various commercial agreements, including major IT agreements, to protect Sydney Water's interests.
  • Advise on rights and obligations under relevant legislation and strategies for early intervention and dispute resolution.
  • Initiate and oversee legal actions and manage defence efforts in collaboration with external legal advisers.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships within Sydney Water and with external legal providers to ensure effective legal service delivery.
  • Collaborate with Senior Legal Counsel – Digital and the Sydney Water’s Digital team to provide legal advice on digital risk, information management contract strategies, cyber and information security and support the development of risk mitigation strategies.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Proven research and analytical skills, with the ability to solve complex problems and make logical judgments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective engagement with stakeholders at all levels.
  • 4 to 6 years' post-admission experience in commercial law and information technology law, preferably with a top-tier or mid-tier law firm before transitioning in-house.
  • Expertise in advising on information security, IT service levels, operational technology, digital projects and operations, cyber security and technology-related legal issues, with cloud computing contract negotiation experience being desirable.
  • Experience working with clients in regulated environments or from the IT industry is preferred.
  • High-quality legal drafting and written advice preparation skills.

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, with unrestricted practising certificate (or eligibility to hold an unrestricted, practicing certificate)
