We are currently seeking a Mining Superintendent to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen/Buka/Madang/Goroka/Alotau/Wapenamanda/Popondetta/ Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the Mining Manager.  

To Manage the activities and resources of all operations groups, including safety, excavation, haulage, and road maintenance contractors to ensure the safe and effective implementation of monthly, weekly, and daily mining schedules. Implementing strategies that optimise the value chain incorporating all aspects of safe, efficient, and effective mining operations consistent with corporate strategy. Provide leadership to the Mining department consistent with the Company’s Vision, Values, and policies

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide effective and efficient mining of the Simberi operations. Duties include both operational and technical functions associated with mining operations and planning, but not being limited to:

  • Production Targets: Ensure that daily, weekly, and monthly production targets are met or exceeded.
  • Operational Efficiency: Optimize mining processes to maximize efficiency and minimize costs.
  • Equipment Utilization: Oversee the proper use and maintenance of mining equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Safety Standards: Enforce and adhere to all safety standards and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Incident Management: Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations and industry standards.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans and ensure the team is trained to manage emergencies.
  • Budget Preparation: Assist in the preparation and management of operational budgets.
  • Cost Control: Monitor and control operational costs, ensuring expenditures remain within budgetary constraints.
  • Financial Reporting: Provide accurate and timely financial and operational reports to senior management.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance productivity and efficiency.
  • Technology Integration: Evaluate and integrate modern technologies and innovations to improve mining operations.
  • Best Practices: Promote the adoption of industry best practices and standards.
  • Internal Communication: Maintain effective communication with senior management, other departments, and team members.
  • External Relations: Consult with external stakeholders, including contractors and suppliers.
  • Community Engagement: Ensure operations consider and address the impacts on local communities and engage in responsible mining practices.
  • Environmental Management: Ensure environmental policies are followed and that mining operations have minimal negative impact on the environment.
  • Acting as Mining Manager as required.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Operational Planning: Develop and implement operational plans and schedules in alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Resource Allocation: Manage the allocation of resources, including labor, equipment, and materials, to ensure efficient operations.
  • Coordination: Collaborate with other departments, such as maintenance, geology, and processing, to ensure seamless operations.
  • Data Management: Oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of operational data to support decision-making and performance tracking.
  • Managing effective use of available resources, including own time, in support of the delivery of the Mine Maintenance team.

People accountabilities

  • Leadership: Provide strong leadership to the operations team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Training and Development: Identify training needs and facilitate professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Performance Management: Conduct performance reviews, set objectives, and provide feedback and coaching to enhance team performance.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Ability to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes
  • Current unencumbered Australian Driver’s Licence
  • A degree qualification in a mining discipline
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience in the mining industry, with appropriate experience in open pit mining
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Commercial acumen relevant to the role
  • Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills.

Desirable

  • PNG Registered Mine Manager ticket
  • A post-graduate degree qualification in mining
  • Strong track record in business improvement
  • Improvement training (e.g., 6 Sigma)
