We are currently seeking a Principal Legal Counsel to join our team based in the Perth CBD. This is a full time 12-month maximum term role, with potential for a subsequent permanent role.
Reporting to the General Counsel and Company Secretary you will provide legal advice and support to a range of corporate, commercial and project related legal matters for our global operations.
The opportunity
- Providing a wide range of drafting, advice and support on legal matters including corporate law/corporate governance, confidentiality agreements, project development, procurement and construction contracts, litigation, financing, mergers/ acquisitions/ divestments, joint venture and third-party collaborations, environmental law and employment law.
- Identifying and mitigating risks and address corporate governance and regulatory compliance issues across a range of the company group's activities.
- Drafting, reviewing, updating and maintaining appropriate policies and procedures for the company group.
- Supporting St Barbara’s Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption compliance systems and registers.
- Supporting the legal team and business with Modern Slavery reporting procedures and processes.
- Ensuring that all relevant internal and external legal compliance obligations are understood and met, including monitoring and reporting on legislative updates that may impact St Barbara’s business.
- Ensuring all contracts are properly executed by St Barbara in accordance with delegated authorities, company policies and procedures and corporation law/legal requirements.
- Assisting with the management of external law firms.
- Processing legal invoices received, raising purchase orders, keeping invoice records and monitoring of legal expenditure against budget.
- Maintaining records of all legal documents and ensuring there is a proper system to store and retrieve all legal documents.
- Providing structured and ad-hoc legal training across a range of functions and business units.

- Admitted to practice as a lawyer in Australia, with competent Post Qualified Experience.
- Experience at a top tier law firm and/or highly regarded in-house legal team.
- Maintains confidentiality and acts in accordance with Company values.
- Demonstrated capacity to prioritise, manage competing deadlines and deliver to promise.
- Proactive, with an ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Competent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Pragmatic, solution focused, balancing legal risk with commercial objectives.
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, and an ability to foster positive relationships with all levels of stakeholders in person and remotely.
- Admitted to practice as a lawyer in Canadian and/or PNG would be highly regarded but not essential.
