We are currently seeking a Senior Mining Engineer – Mine Planning to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Superintendent Mine Technical Services, the Senior Mine Engineer - Mine Planning, is responsible for the development of optimised, accurate and consistent medium term (13 Week) production plans using Alastri’s Tactical Scheduler. The role will also assist with long term planning, Whittle optimisation and provide technical and professional leadership and support to the Simberi Operations consistent with the Company’s Vision, Values and policies.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Safety leader.
  • Ownership and responsibility for the development, implementation, and ongoing management of the Medium Term (13 Week) Mine Plans and associated projects.
  • Assist the Technical Services Superintendent to implement a suite of fit-for-purpose medium term planning systems and ensure they are operated appropriately.
  • Ensure the delivery of timely, optimised and accurate monthly and quarterly forecasts that align to the budget and the life of mine (LOM) plans for the Simberi Operations.
  • Key participant in the creation of the Simberi’s annual Budget.
  • Assist in the production of the annual 3 year budget physicals and Operating and Capital Cost estimates.
  • Assist Senior Engineer – Strategic planning and Technical Services Superintendent on Strategic mine plans including long term planning, Whittle optimisation, Cut-off Grade estimation and Ore Reserve estimation.
  • Engaging stakeholders to understand business-wide objectives and constraints to inform assumptions, decisions, and limitations when developing monthly forecasts and mine projects.
  • Track the performance of the Medium Term (13 Week) Plans against actual plan performance.
  • Review and update life of mine designs to allow safe and practical construction and use.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting with the Technical Services Department to all stakeholders.
  • Design, coordinate or participate in major mining projects associated with MTS, Mining Operations and Contractors.
  • Propose and drive MTS and Mining improvement Initiatives.
  • Maintain effective communication and interaction with Mining Operations Site Leadership team and other key stake holders.
  • Ability to train and mentor other engineers. 

Safety & Teamwork

  • Ensure mining safety practices are observed and adhered to every day whilst conducting mine technical services functions of the mining operations.
  • Immediately report any actual or potential unsafe conditions or activities, mishaps, incidents, accidents, injuries, or illnesses in the workplace to the Supervisor or Head of Department
  • Complying with instructions given pertaining to the use of personal protective clothing, equipment or gear or any matter in relation to health and safety.
  • Comply with established OH&S policies and practices and regularly communicate and discuss new OH&S initiatives.
  • Actively participate in toolbox meetings and safety meetings.
  • Personally demonstrate a positive attitude towards working safely. 

Environment & Community

  • Comply with established environmentally sustainable measures to not adversely impact on the natural fauna, flora, freshwater resources, and marine life within the bounds of Simberi Island.
  • Ensuring all tasks are conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner.
  • Work with and develop the community through the support of company initiatives. 

Learning and Development

  • Assist with the training and development of the team including graduate mining engineers.
  • Ensure own work performance meets all role requirements.
  • Manage your professional learning and development to develop in current role and for future roles.

We would love to hear from you if you have​:

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Ability to produce a PNG National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes
  • Current unencumbered Papua New Guinea’s ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence
  • A degree qualification in a mining in mining engineering or related discipline
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in the mining industry, with appropriate experience in the mining industry
  • Experience user of Mine design/planning and scheduling software’s
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Strong technical communication and influencing skills 

Desirable

  • Relevant resources industry work experience
  • Experience using Deswik software highly desirable
  • Strong track record in mine planning and mine production
  • Experience undertaking mining studies and project work
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Ability to lead a group of technical professionals
