We are currently seeking a Environment Superintendent to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Environment Manager.
The Environment Superintendent is responsible for Lead, improve and drive the implementation of site environmental management and monitoring plans, programs, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable legal and other requirements in order that the environmental impacts of the operations on the communities are avoided, minimized or mitigated. This includes leading the implementation, and continuous improvement of the site Environment Management System (ISO14001).
The opportunity
Technical accountabilities
- Providing leadership and direction and maintain a safe and productive operating environment for all personnel associated with the Environment Department.
- Responsible for the implementation and embedding of the ISO 14001 EMS as the core system underpinning the execution of the environmental charter of the Simberi Operations and identifying and implementing opportunities for continuous improvements.
- Responsible for the collection, storage, processing and dissemination of accurate information and environmental data and records, including maintaining a compliance register identifying prescribed statutory accountabilities and the site personnel with those primary accountabilities.
- Providing timely, accurate and relevant environmental management-related services and support (e.g., advice, environmental training and inductions, reviews, reports, and contribution to activities such as environmental risk assessments, incident investigations, and water, land management, rehabilitation, and flora and fauna management strategies) to the site managers.
- Supporting the improvement and sustenance of environment management-related knowledge and skills across Simberi Operations.
- Managing timely and effective environmental approvals for changes to development and mining plans.
- Contributing to ensuring that the Environment Department meets all relevant internal and external compliance obligations.
- Contributing to ensuring a constructive and creative environment for business improvement and change management within the Environment Department.
- Ensuring timely, accurate reporting to the Manager Environment and other relevant internal and external parties.
- Contributing productively as a member of the Environment Department Leadership Team and provide coverage for the manager role during the absence of the incumbent

- Provides input to SBM strategies.
- Applies business and technical expertise to guide department in solving problems and take decisive action.
- Maintains an effective management system to review and monitor progress, taking corrective action where necessary.
- Encourages continuous improvement and change management across department.
Environment & Community
- Contributing to ensuring the Environment Department develops, implements and reports against effective plans that derive from and support the Company and Simberi Operations strategy and plans in order that the environmental impacts of the operations on the communities and receiving environment are avoided, minimised or mitigated.

People
- Building, developing and leading an effective and increasingly capable Environment team.
- Ensuring the work performance of self and direct reports meets all role and business plan requirements.
- Coaching and mentoring subordinates to realizing their career aspirations and identifying talent for succession planning and growth within the company

Essential
- Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- Current PNG Driver’s Licence
- A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science or equivalent
- At least seven (7) years relevant experience, with practical understanding of environmental regulatory environments, best practice and ISO 14001
- A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in a mining and/or heavy engineering/industrial environment in a similar leadership role
- Computer literate and familiarity with environmental management information systems software
- Ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities and reconciling these with one-year Environment Section objectives
- Demonstrated capability in organising work, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement
- Provide leadership and direction, harnessing the collective potential of the team to achieve work plans and targets
- High energy and level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
- Strong interpersonal discipline, influencing and communication skills
- Preparedness to take a well-reasoned stand on matters of importance
- Minimum of Cert IV Occupational Health and Safety qualification
Desirable
- A valid PNG Driver’s License
- A post-graduate degree qualification in a relevant discipline
- Environmental Lead Auditor
- Other skills such as environmental database management e.g. MP5, GIS etc
