We are currently seeking a Dewatering Specialist to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Vanimo, Wewak or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Production Coordinator.
The Dewatering Specialist is responsible for the planning, implementation, and optimization of water management systems to control groundwater and surface water at a mine site. Their primary role involves ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant dewatering operations to maintain mine stability, protect operational assets, and support production targets in compliance with industry safety standards and the Company’s safety and environment policy and procedures.
The opportunity
Technical accountabilities
- Design and Management of Dewatering Systems: Develop, implement, and monitor dewatering systems (pumps, pipelines, sumps) to control water inflow, reduce groundwater levels, and maintain dry conditions in mine pits, shafts, and waste areas.
- Operational Oversight: Coordinate daily dewatering operations, adjusting systems based on changing groundwater conditions or seasonal variances. Maintain continuous communication with mine operations teams to ensure dewatering aligns with operational needs.
- Water Quality and Environmental Compliance: Ensure dewatering activities adhere to environmental regulations, water discharge permits, and safety standards. Monitor water quality, manage environmental impacts, and adjust dewatering strategies as needed.
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyse hydrogeological data to evaluate groundwater levels, water flow rates, and efficiency of dewatering systems. Use data to identify trends, anticipate needs, and improve system performance.
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Oversee the maintenance, repair, and replacement of dewatering equipment, ensuring maximum operational uptime and effectiveness. Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues to minimize disruptions.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with engineering, environmental, and operations teams, as well as external consultants, to support effective dewatering strategies. This collaboration includes participating in planning and budget discussions.
- Reporting and Documentation: Generate detailed reports on dewatering system performance, maintenance activities, and compliance status. Document operational procedures, maintenance records, and water management plans.
- Comply with established environmentally sustainable measures to not adversely impact on the natural fauna, flora, freshwater resources and marine life within the bounds of Simberi Island
- Identify any potentially hazardous work/environmental situations and address these with the Mining Supervisor and Mining Engineer.
Scheduling accountabilities
- Plan the daily activities accordingly that is in line with the weekly plan.
- Coordinate dewatering activity with Supervisors.
- Provide daily management and supervision to ensure that all incident recalls and toolbox meetings are done prior to commencement of daily activity on the mine pits
- Organise the duties of the dewatering personnel to ensure that they are carried out safely and satisfactorily
People accountabilities
- Ensure that subordinates have all undergone a thorough workplace induction prior to being actively involved in work routines at the dewatering areas on the mine pits.
- Ensure that subordinates are properly trained and are well versed in dewatering procedures and standard work practices.
- Provide direction and act as a technical reference point and mentor for subordinates.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory and company standards through training and development of personnel and promoting such by example
- Be responsible for implementing and monitoring of performance and development review for all personnel within the work unit / direct subordinates.
- Be accountable for the initiation of any disciplinary action or reward recognition for personnel under direct supervision within the work unit.
- Provide coaching and training for subordinates (especially local employees) with a view to promoting their level of competency.
- Identify training requirements of subordinates through consultation with the employees and recommend to supervisors.
- Using established training methods and in conjunction with the Training Department train subordinates to achieve competency in the area identified and within the scope of their position
- Participate in training provided by the business.

Essential

- Have a minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in Mine Dewatering.
- Competent in swiftly ramping up on site activities with efficient cross-function skills and ensuring on time completion.
- Well-developed communicator and a natural leader.
- Sound analysing and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment with other staff members to achieve stated responsibilities and duties.
- Actively participate and promote a safe working environment, participate in Departmental safety meetings and display a safety conscience attitude in accordance with the OH&S policies and procedures, and safe working practices.
- Ability to plan work effectively and efficiently with a minimum of supervision and to set priorities.
- Some knowledge in written and verbal skills, ability to provide reports to mining supervisor/production superintendent.
- Punctual attendance for all rostered shifts.
- Prepared to accept responsibilities.
