We are currently seeking a Environment Manager to join our team, permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen/Buka/Madang/Goroka/Alotau/Wapenamanda/Popondetta/Hoskins/ Vanimo/ Wewak or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the General Manager.   

The Environment Manager is responsible for overseeing all environmental management and compliance activities, fostering strong relations with key stakeholders, and ensuring Simberi Operations comply with all internal and external environmental and community-related regulations.

 This role emphasises strategic leadership, operational excellence, and maintaining a positive presence within the host communities.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities 

  • Leading safe work practices by ensuring safe work conditions and practices in the Department, proactively investigating all safety and health concerns and implementing continuous improvement in safety.
  • Implementing management systems to reduce the impact of existing mining activities on freshwater and marine ecosystems
  • Engaging with operational departments to implement proactive management systems to mitigate the impact of new site developments
  • Support the Community Relations Department by facilitating stakeholder engagement through regular interactions with landowners, affected communities, and regulatory bodies such as MRA and CEPA.
  • Support the Community Relations Department by Identifying opportunities for community involvement and working with local groups to participate in the company’s project activities.
  • Support the Rehabilitation Department in Simberi Operations efforts in progressive rehabilitation and remediation.
  • Deliver studies to determine and manage the long-term impacts of mining operations, such as ARD and sedimentation.
  • Develop and implement strategies for the disposal of scrap metal and waste hydrocarbons on site.
  • Identifying and Quantifying risk to budget by reviewing and actioning all high risks on the Insurance Reports related to the Environment and identifying and managing key risks to the company, i.e., Regulatory action.
  • Overseeing and managing operational and capital budgets for the Environmental Department.
  • Providing timely, accurate and relevant Environmental advice to the Executive General Manager and the site Leadership Team.
  • Ensure Simberi Operations meets all relevant internal and external environmental obligations and fosters positive relationships with host communities.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Managing the effective use of available resources, including own time, to support the delivery of the Environmental Department deliverables.
  • Scheduling regular audits of site performance to maintain compliance with permit conditions and Ensure compliance with all regulatory bodies.

People accountabilities

  • Contributing to the development of capability within the Department.
  • Building and developing an effective Department.
  • Ensuring own work performance meets all role requirements; and taking appropriate professional development actions.
  • Managing outputs and development of the Department and all Team Members.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values.
  • Ability to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes
  • At least 8 years of relevant Environmental experience in a mining operation
  • Strong ability to work effectively within a team
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines on multiple tasks
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high-performance goals
  • Commercial acumen relevant to the role

 Desirable

  • Relevant resources and industry work experience
