This is a full time, permanent position working Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm.
As a General Studies Teacher in the Welfare and Engagement (W&E) team, you’ll make a positive impact by:

  • Planning, facilitating, managing, and delivering structured and unstructured Programmes and Activities (P&A) for individuals in immigration detention, including educational, sporting, recreational, spiritual, and leisure activities.
  • Ensuring activities are meaningful and encourage detainees to actively participate.
  • Preparing materials and delivery areas for activities prior to commencement of every session.
  • Instructing detainees individually and in groups, using various teaching methods including presentations, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Planning and conducting activities for a balanced program, providing detainees with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.

To be successful in this role you’ll have:

  • Experience in working with people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and different religious backgrounds.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in the delivery of adult educational programmes in an institution or community setting is desirable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the influence educational opportunities can have on improved mental health for individuals.
  • Sound experience in the development, planning, organizing, delivery, and review of educational programmes which are engaging, meaningful and relevant to diverse needs and interests.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Evidence of effectively prioritizing, executing tasks, providing innovative ideas to improve service delivery.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and its applications.
  • Ability to proactively build rapport and create culturally secure respectful relationships, including with vulnerable people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and those who have may have recent experience in the criminal justice system.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
