About us

Queensland Hydro is a publicly owned entity established by the Queensland Government to design, deliver, operate and maintain long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets that will be the cornerstone for the transformation of the state’s energy system.

We will drive delivery of world-class pumped hydro assets to provide the long-term storage and reliability needed to power Queensland’s clean energy future. Queensland Hydro will play a critical role in assisting the Queensland Government to meet its renewable energy targets and net zero emissions by 2050, supporting the shift in the Australian economy to a decarbonised energy system.

The Purpose

The Project Manager, Underground _ Main Works, will provide onsite leadership and project management for the underground scope of the Main Works, overseeing contractor activities and leading a multi-disciplinary team to ensure project objectives are met. This includes managing scope, budget, schedule, quality, procurement, resources, communications, and risks proactively.

The Role

The Project Manager, Underground Main Works is accountable for overseeing the underground construction contract, managing risks, and ensuring the successful delivery of all project aspects. This includes developing and maintaining key project documentation such as budgets, schedules, risk registers, and the Project Management Plan.

The role involves administering contracts, managing multiple project elements of varying complexity, and ensuring compliance with environmental, cultural heritage, procurement, and safety standards. The Project Manager fosters strong relationships with stakeholders, communicates effectively to address concerns, and ensures that business processes and policies are met.

About You

The position requires a degree in mining, civil, or geotechnical engineering, with a minimum of 15+ years of experience in underground hard rock mining, tunnelling, and shaft sinking, including project initiation and planning. You must demonstrate expertise in managing design and construct contracts, particularly with incentivized target cost models, and have a deep understanding of modern underground mining, shaft sinking, and civil practices.

Experience with both contractors and owner teams, along with a strong background in greenfield underground project execution, is required. The role demands the ability to develop and implement structured project plans, manage risks, and deliver projects on time and within budget, using financial and scheduling tools effectively.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills across all levels are critical. Desirable qualifications include project management certifications, eligibility for RPEQ registration, and experience in government-owned infrastructure projects, hydro, or pumped storage. Relocation to the Sunshine Coast is preferred.
