Queensland Hydro is a publicly owned entity established by the Queensland Government to design, deliver, operate and maintain long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets that will be the cornerstone for the transformation of the state’s energy system.

Purpose
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant with 1-2 years of experience, ideally in public practice, to join our dynamic accounting team. The successful candidate will play a key role in providing essential accounting services to our pumped hydro energy storage (PHES)projects from the Brisbane support office. This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your accounting skills and grow within a supportive and professional environment.
Key Accountabilities
The Assistant Accountant’s key accountabilities are to:
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements in accordance with accounting standards.
- Assist in the preparation of FBT, BAS and income tax returns for the company, ensuring compliance with relevant tax legislation.
- Communicate with other business units to gather necessary financial information, answer queries, and provide advice on governance and compliance requirements.
- To maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including preparation and posting of GL journals and balance sheet reconciliations, under senior accountant’s supervision.
- Provide support for the accounts payable, purchase ordering, and payroll processing functions, where required.
- Support the audit process by gathering and organising documentation and assisting in the review of financial records.
- Provide basic financial advice to the business under the supervision of senior accountants, including budgeting, cash flow management, and tax implications.
- Utilise accounting software to perform GL reviews, GL journals, financial analysis, and reporting tasks.
- Be familiar with, and follow, the company’s governance and compliance requirements and how they are applied across the finance function, as well as the wider business. Provide feedback and process improvement advice to stakeholders where necessary.
- Stay updated on the latest accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry trends to ensure compliance and provide the best service to clients.
About you
To be successful in this position, you will ideally possess the following:
Essential:
- Degree qualification in finance, accounting, or other relevant discipline.
- Currently or intending to work towards CPA or CA qualification (study support available).
Knowledge and Skills:
Essential:
- Minimum 1-2 years in similar type role, or public practice.
- Knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Australian tax legislation, guidance and rules.
- Excellent time management; as well as the ability to produce reliable, highly accurate workpapers within specified timeframes.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate across different levels of an organisations with differing degrees of financial knowledge.
- Intermediate MS Excel skills.
Desirable:
- Experience within a funded project environment.
- Awareness of Qld government financial management governance and reporting.
- Experience working in a range of finance systems.
- Finance systems experience.
Special Requirements and Working Conditions
- Domestic and International Travel (by modes of transport including but not limited to vehicle, helicopter, airplane)
- Ability to respond to and deal with requests from key stakeholders at short notice, including outside of traditional working hours
