Queensland Hydro was established by the Queensland Government to deliver long-duration pumped hydro energy storage projects so we can transition to a stable renewable energy future.  

Pumped hydro energy storage has a critical role in helping to meet the Queensland Government’s renewable energy targets and Australia’s Towards Net Zero goals by 2050. Queensland Hydro’s proposed pumped hydro energy storage projects can deliver the ultimate assurance for the State’s energy transition and play a defining role in securing a stable transition to renewable energy.  

Purpose

The Project Environmental Advisor role for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project, is a key role assisting to ensure environmental compliance, management of environmental offset activities, undertaking project permitting inspections and fostering sustainable practices throughout the project's lifecycle. This position provides guidance and oversight across all environmental facets during the project's lifecycle requiring a unique blend of technical proficiency, collaboration, and proactive planning to enable environmental compliance, mitigate ecological impact, and management of environmental offset activities. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the team leading environmentally responsible infrastructure delivery on a large scale. 

The Role 

Key Accountabilities include but not limited to

  • Assist with the identification, implementation, and management of offset measures to compensate for unavoidable environmental impacts, ensuring net positive environmental outcomes. 
  • Participate in engagement efforts regarding environmental, sustainability and cultural heritage issues with diverse stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, local communities, environmental agencies, and within the Project.  
  • Facilitate effective communication, address concerns, and foster partnerships to promote environmental stewardship and community involvement regarding environmental, sustainability and cultural heritage related matters. 
  • Assist with the design, implement, and refine robust environmental management systems tailored specifically for the Project to ensure environmental compliance throughout the Project. 
  • Support the development and implementation of policies, methodologies, standards and specifications across the Project to maximise environmental, sustainability and cultural heritage management activities and outcomes. 
  • Assist with the development and conducting workshops and training sessions to enhance awareness among project teams regarding environmental regulations, best practices, and the importance of sustainability.  
  • Champion a culture of environmental responsibility within the project framework. 

About You

It would be desirable to have the following attribute

  • Bachelor’s degree qualification in environmental science, natural resource management, environmental engineering or equivalent and 5+ years of experience including extensive demonstrated experience leading environmental aspects of large infrastructure projects and leadership of teams is required. 
  • Registration (or ability to obtain registration within 6 months of appointment) as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) is desirable for holders of an environmental engineering qualification. 
  • Strong knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and compliance standards relevant to delivery of large infrastructure projects in Queensland, Australia. 
  • Advanced problem-solving abilities and a strategic approach to environmental planning and execution. 
  • Passionate about driving sustainable initiatives and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within project development.
