As a Future Networks Engineer at PowerNet in Invercargill, you will be at the forefront of energy innovation, using advanced power system modelling and analysis, controlling energy resources, and developing scenarios and solutions to shape our network's future. This role is a key part of our New Energy team, where you’ll harness leading-edge technology, smart metering data, and analytical insights to identify and implement impactful solutions. Engaging with key stakeholders across the business, you’ll ensure alignment and successful outcomes that enable our future networks to leverage technology and solutions to deliver power to our communities efficiently and sustainably.

Key Responsibilities:
Power System Modelling & Analysis: Develop and maintain distribution network models using tools like Cyme or PowerFactory for current and future scenarios. Forecast network congestion and hosting capacity for 10+ years.
CER/DER Control Solutions: Transition existing load control to alternative modern systems; identify, analyse, and implement Customer/Distributed Energy Resources (CER/DER) control solutions to manage congestion and deliver other value streams.
Customer & Partner Engagement: Run pilot trials to determine CER/DER control potential and develop required customer agreements and incentives.
New Connections Support: Assist with new technology connections, including Distributed Generation and Battery Energy Storage.
Network Monitoring: Use tools like Hiko Insights to monitor LV network loading and performance; develop cases for additional data acquisition where needed.
Strategy & Compliance: Contribute to strategy development, stay current on standards, and support regulatory compliance.
Reporting & Knowledge Sharing: Prepare and deliver reports and presentations, offering insights and training to internal and external audiences.
Training & Development: Identify training needs, support skill development across PowerNet, and foster team growth.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Electrical or Power Systems)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in or working with an electricity distribution business.
- Strong background in power system modelling and analysis, with experience in CER/DER systems and technologies.
- Skilled in economic analysis, data analysis, scripting, programming, and business case development.
- Effective relationship management and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Project management experience is advantageous.
