Asset Engineer - Power Assets

Tauranga

About Powerco

The energy industry is on the verge of a radical transformation. Here at Powerco, we're busy keeping the lights on and gas flowing to more than 430,000 homes, businesses and organisations across the North Island. If you're an engineering professional looking for your next challenge, it's time to join the fast-paced, exciting company that powers NZ's largest electricity distribution network. Our people work on some pretty cool projects, often industry leading and are proud to be here.

About the role

Join our team as an Asset Engineer in the Power Assets team, where you'll lead strategic asset management initiatives to ensure optimal performance and reliability of our power assets.

Your primary responsibility will be to develop and execute comprehensive strategies for identifying, understanding, and mitigating risks to achieve optimal asset life. Collaborating closely with internal stakeholders, you'll drive strategic investment decisions to balance OPEX and CAPEX, aiming for the best whole-of-lifecycle costs for our network and customers.

You'll spearhead the development of Powerco's renewals and replacement investment programs, wielding the ability to influence where and when investments are made. By optimising asset management practices, you'll deliver maximum value to our customers, ensuring the long-term reliability and sustainability of our business.

About you

Let's talk about you. We’re looking for candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, BEngTech, or NZ Diploma in Electrical Engineering, combined with relevant industry experience—at least five years in asset management, construction/maintenance, or engineering roles within the electrical power supply industry. You should have a strong technical understanding of Zone Substation assets, including knowledge of failure modes, lifecycle management principles, and risk assessment methodologies.

Proven expertise in managing Zone substations such as power transformers, outdoor switchgear, switchboards, and associated plant is essential. You should be comfortable supporting investment decisions and maintaining alignment with Powerco’s asset management strategies. Experience with asset analytical modelling tools and techniques, such as CNAIM, and proficiency in data analysis to inform decision-making is highly desirable.

In addition to your technical skills, we’re looking for strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across internal teams and external stakeholders. A continuous improvement mindset, along with the ability to assess task urgency, prioritize effectively, and manage workloads efficiently, will set you apart in this role.

Our investment in you:

Life is good here at Powerco. You'll join a fun, tight-knit group of dedicated, passionate people and play a key role in a company that connects communities. In addition to competitive salary offerings, health and wellness packages, you’ll also get the satisfaction of playing an important part in helping us deliver an essential service to our communities.   We’re flexible – we believe in a mix between home and office.

At Powerco we focus on growing talent and provide opportunities to develop through a technical or leadership pathway. We believe, we are better together.
