Information Security Advisor

New Plymouth with flexible working options available

The information systems that underpin our business are becoming vastly more complex, tightly integrated with one another, and reliant upon cloud infrastructure to function. Are you passionate about helping others explore the risks this introduces, and how they can go about digitally protecting themselves, the organisation, and our customers? If you enjoy variety, problem-solving, and the autonomy to shape how we work, then this Information Security Advisor role may be for you!

About us

Our purpose is to connect communities. It’s at the heart of everything we do as we serve our customers now and into the future. At Powerco, we’re passionate about doing Mahi that keeps over 1.1 million customers connected and enables energy choices as we support Aotearoa on the journey to a low-carbon future.

Ngā Tikanga - Our Way, is what guides us to achieve our purpose and ensures we’re better together, work smarter, proud to be here, and future-focused in how we work together with each other, our communities, and industry stakeholders.

About the role

Reporting to the Information Security Manager, you’ll help our business understand and manage cyber security risks that have the potential to stop us from delivering on our core purpose. Your interpersonal skills, your enthusiasm, and your curiosity will help our internal stakeholders understand the risks they face, and with the help of the wider Risk and Information Security team, the ways in which we can work together to effectively manage those risks.

This role isn’t the usual IT risk management role you’ll see - we’re after someone who can see the big picture, who understands that effective cyber security is all about striking the right balance, and who can translate some deeply technical concepts into something the wider business can understand.

The Information Security Team is purpose-driven and a place where development, growth, and collaboration are both valued and encouraged. Our people are trusted amongst the wider organisation and are empowered to make decisions that directly influence the direction it takes. In this role, you’ll be someone that people look to for guidance when it comes to cyber security.

Skills & Experience

To be a success in this role, you will:

  • Have some understanding of how computer systems and software interact, allowing you to frame up and ask questions to help system owners uncover cyber risk.
  • Understand what basic security controls exist to manage the most common IT risks (e.g. access control monitoring, anti-malware, backup and restore technologies).
  • Potentially have prior experience in managing risk in alignment with an industry-recognised framework (ISO-27001, NIST, CIS) – but we can help teach this if not.
  • Feel comfortable and confident presenting in group settings and championing risk analysis workshops.
  • Have prior experience working with Information Security technologies.
  • Be passionate about your role and driven to boost Powerco’s culture of cyber awareness.

Our investment in you

  • Loads of flexibility – we embrace hybrid working.
  • All the usual stuff, but way better – 4% KiwiSaver, ability to buy extra leave, paid volunteer days, free fruit in the office, amazing Parental Leave entitlements, free life and medical insurance – Wow!!!
  • As much growth and development as you can take!
  • Working with an inclusive, supportive and fun team – well we’d like to think so

Applications close: Sunday 4th August 2024

Our ability to get the best out of people is what sets Powerco apart. We realise that candidates – especially from underrepresented and neurodiverse backgrounds – often won’t apply for roles unless they meet ALL the criteria. We encourage anyone who shares our passion for connecting communities to apply for any role that aligns to your strengths and interests. We will provide a safe space where you can bring your whole self to work and thrive.

If you would benefit from support or adjustments in order to participate equitably in the recruitment process, please phone 0800 769372 or email kiaora@powerco.co.nz
