Technical / Operations Architect

Security Clearance Required for this role:

• Must have a Current Baseline security clearance.
• Must be an Australian Citizen
• This will be an Office based/Hybrid role in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide & Sydney locations.

The Technical / Operations Architect will provide strategic architectural advice and deliver large-scale, integrated cloud solutions within a data and analytics program being delivered for an end customer in a government department.

This role is crucial in shaping highly available, scalable, resilient, secure, and cost-optimized technical solutions that align with enterprise architecture and broader digital transformation goals.

Operating within an agile, multi-vendor environment, the Technical / Operations Architect will support cross-functional teams by driving best-practice operations architecture, automation, systems performance, and cloud service management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide architectural direction and implement high-resilience and cost-optimized cloud-based operational systems.
• Evaluate and enhance system availability, maintainability, and scalability across hybrid environments (cloud/on-prem/mainframe).
• Design and implement failover mechanisms, disaster recovery strategies, and performance optimization frameworks.
• Identify opportunities for automation and monitoring and recommend enhancements to operational infrastructure.
• Support delivery and production support teams to ensure optimal service levels and system outcomes.
• Enable seamless integration of data and analytics platforms with broader enterprise and cloud ecosystems.
• Contribute to and align with enterprise architecture governance processes and artefact development.
• Implement FinOps practices to ensure financial efficiency and governance in cloud environments.
• Ensure compliance with government security, privacy, and data governance policies.
• Promote DevSecOps practices and support continuous improvement through automation and lean engineering.
• Support knowledge transfer and capability uplift across internal teams as part of the engagement.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Proven experience in operations architecture within large-scale cloud environments (AWS and Azure preferred).
• Strong background in resiliency planning, failover architecture, and high availability systems.
• Expertise in system performance tuning, site reliability engineering (SRE), and infrastructure optimization.
• Hands-on experience designing and implementing automated operations and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Familiarity with cloud monitoring and observability tools.
• Demonstrated ability to work in Agile, DevSecOps, and multi-vendor teams.
• Strong understanding of FinOps practices, including cost reporting, cloud cost governance, and optimization.
• Excellent communication skills with both technical and business stakeholders.
• Experience developing and maintaining architecture documentation and knowledge artefacts.
