Melbourne Airport is embarking on one of its most significant projects to date—the development of its third runway (M3R) and associated airport expansion initiatives. To support this transformational endeavour, we are seeking a skilled and dynamic Safety Business Partner, Construction join the Melbourne Airport Safety Team to assist implement and monitor the safety management system across different projects. 

This role reports to the Senior Manager, Safety, and is responsible for implementing and monitoring the Australia Pacific Airports Corporation's (APAC's) Safety Management Standard across APAM capital projects and monitor safety principles, processes, and procedures to ensure APAC is meeting its legislative obligations with respect to health and public safety.

Key responsibilities:

The role's duties and accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

Safety Assurance

  • Manage the implementation and monitoring of the APAC Safety Management Standard across all construction capital projects.
  • Execute and manage the APAC Safety Activity Schedule for Construction projects (inspections, audits, safety interventions, safety in action program)
  • Ensure appropriate safety support is in place for critical projects and provide guidance to Program Directors and Program Managers in effective safety management.
  • Assist in the execution and quality of APAM Safety in Design workshops for capital projects.

Safety Culture

  • Assist in the coordination, implementation and tracking of APAC safety culture initiatives.

Consultation and Communication

  • Collaborate with Program Directors, Program Managers and Business Unit stakeholders to identify potential health and safety risks and hazards and ensure appropriate control measures are implemented.
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders on APAC safety requirements.

Safety Support

  • Support the Head of Safety, Risk and Compliance and Senior Safety Advisor to ensure APAC responsibilities under Victorian and Commonwealth WHS legislation are fulfilled.
  • Participate in BU Construction Safety, Environment and Risk Committee meetings.
  • Assist with Administration of SIMS (Safety Information management System), including review, analysis and escalation of incidents and hazards to APAM stakeholders.
  • Assist with safety support for all Business Units.
  • Provide training and instruction on SIMs to Program Directors and Managers

Safety Management Systems

  • Ensure Safety Management Plans are in place for critical projects and meet APAC safety requirements.
  • Support BUs to administer the APAC Safety Management Standard and Group Level Safety Documents (GLSD). 
  • Assist in identifying system change requirements based on OHS legislation change and for organisational need.

Safety Reporting

  • Collate and compile safety data from construction projects monthly and as required.
  • Ensure correct reporting of incidents and investigations in SIMS.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Diploma or degree qualification in OH&S/WHS
  • Experience applying OH&S principles on construction sites/projects
  • Root Cause Analysis accreditation (ICAM or Taproot)
  • Knowledge of OH&S legislation and experience in applying OH&S legislation to workplace environments
  • Experience applying Safety in Design principles
  • Advanced report writing and analytical skills
  • Solution-based approach to safety issues
  • Experience in high risk environments, including construction
