The role

Are you tired of the bureaucracy and politics of big firms? We’re looking for an Associate or Senior Associate to join our rapidly expanding team. We are a flexible, diverse group, and are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, agile and fun.

This is an Associate/Senior Associate position working with Bryan Ventura who leads Hamilton Locke NZ’s financial services practice and joined from MinterEllisonRuddWatts. Bryan is a modern digital lawyer, advising on emerging technologies and their intersection with financial services regulation, AML, corporate, securities, intellectual property and commercial laws. Of note, he has expertise in, FinTech, blockchain and cryptocurrencies, Web3 technologies, NFTs, AI, metaverses, decentralized finance (DeFi), utility & security tokens, stablecoins, VASP regulation, wallets, payments, etc. 

Bryan is an experienced lawyer in financial services regulation, corporate & securities law, capital markets (private and public), investment funds and commercial law. He works closely with his Hamilton Locke colleagues in Australia on various matters, including advising overseas insurance underwriters, underwriting agents, brokers and fund managers. 

Bryan works with most of NZ’s leading blockchain and digital asset companies, including VeVe Digital Collectibles, Futureverse, a tokenised securities exchange, an NFT platform (and others) – advising on cutting-edge products and services.

Bryan’s clients include tech startups, SMEs, and large corporates, based in NZ or overseas – including an NZX listed company and all types of financial service businesses.

You will work with Bryan across his entire practice area. Importantly, you will work on the cutting edge of NZ law. This includes: 

  • advisory work (spanning financial services regulation, AML, corporate & securities law, capital markets (private and public), NZX Rules, commercial law, intellectual property);
  • advisory work on emerging technologies (FinTech / blockchain / crypto, AI, the metaverse);
  • capital raising transactions (investor side and company side) and financial services M&A transactions;
  • corporate & commercial transactions (various contracts, shareholder arrangements, etc);
  • establishing financial products and services, digital financial platforms, investment funds and other investment vehicles – covering multiple asset classes, such as digital assets / NFTs, venture capital, private equity, property, credit, etc; and
  • engaging with NZ regulators.

You will also have the opportunity to work with our other NZ corporate & commercial partners, Maggie Chang, Jeffrey Lai and Corin Maberly.

We’re looking for someone: 

  • with 5+ years’ legal experience in financial services; and/or
  • with 5+ years’ legal experience in corporate and securities law; and 
  • with experience supervising and mentoring junior lawyers as well as managing client matters
  • who has a strong sense of purpose, ambition, confidence and a proactive approach to work
  • with a desire to work with existing and new clients on business growth
