Transport Planning and Operations (TPO) is essential in managing Brisbane’s transport network, ensuring the efficient movement of people and freight. We focus on keeping Brisbane moving across our roads, bikeways, and shared paths.

The Brisbane Metropolitan Transport Management Centre (BMTMC) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council, delivering best-practice transport services to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient commuting across the metropolitan road network.

Operating 24/7 from a state-of-the-art operations room, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), Brisbane City Council, TransLink, and Transport for Brisbane work together to manage traffic and public transport for nearly half of Queensland’s population. This team oversees traffic flow, responding to real-time events, incidents, and weather disruptions.

In this high-tech environment, you and your peers will monitor thousands of kilometres of road at once, using advanced systems to manage incidents and coordinate solutions with the community, police, state government, and private organisations. A strong mindset and emotional strength are essential, as the operations room can be high-pressure, with tensions rising quickly during critical incidents. Despite the serious nature of the work, there is plenty of camaraderie, humour, and team spirit. Team members need to be adaptable, able to switch modes quickly from light-hearted moments to high-stakes situations, while maintaining clear, calm communication under pressure.

As Brisbane is a busy, modern city, requiring around the clock service, you will commit a minimum of 72.5-hour fortnight on a rotating 24-hour roster with shifts between 6am-6pm and 6pm-6am.

To be considered, you will have:

  • ability to work well autonomously and within a high-performing team
  • experience in independently responding to complex, real-time situations and delivering quality responses and effective solutions
  • proficiency in operating multiple computer-based systems, including data capture and surveillance, in high-pressure environments
  • strong written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on customer service to multiple stakeholders, and
  • excellent organisational and administrative skills, including data entry and record-keeping.
