Our Branch

Our Compliance and Regulatory Services Branch (CaRS) ensures Council is building a better Brisbane. We contribute to the health, safety and amenity of Brisbane through a range of licensing and regulatory services related to environmental health, land use and built environment, animal management, asset use and the natural environment. We provide best practice regulatory services that contribute positively to the quality and lifestyle of the city.

Built Environment (BE) is a diverse work unit that undertakes compliance and assessments issues including event compliance, unlawful building work, built to boundary structures and walls, advertising signs, storm water runoff and overland flow, retaining walls, dangerous structures, demolitions, house removals, swimming pool safety issues (fencing), fire safety and overcrowding in budget and student accommodation, footway and driveway permits, siting variations, home businesses, development in waterways and wetlands, general nuisances especially around non-compliance with development approvals and technical advice.

The Role

As the Built Environment Supervisor, you will lead a team ensuring compliance and operational excellence in the built environment. You will be responsible for promoting a customer-focused culture, managing change initiatives, and ensuring adherence to relevant legislation and standards. The role will involve liaising with various internal and external stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes for the city, contributing to business improvements, and supporting team performance.

  • lead and role model a customer-focused approach
  • champion change management and reform within the team
  • manage and support compliance with built environment standards and legislation
  • foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders and manage complex negotiations
  • monitor and manage the budget for the built environment team
  • participation in an on-call roster, reasonable after-hours activities and overtime when required by business needs.

To be successful you will have:

  • demonstrated leadership abilities aligned with Council’s Leadership Blueprint
  • strong experience in change management and strategic direction
  • in-depth knowledge of legislation relevant to the built environment
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills for negotiation and stakeholder management
  • proven problem-solving skills to resolve complex issues effectively
  • a current C class driver’s licence.
