City Planning and Sustainability is one of six divisions within the largest local government in Australia. Within this division, City Planning and Economic Development is the centre of excellence, developing strategic planning policy, economic strategies, quality urban design creative outcomes and key legislation including the Brisbane City Plan 2014.  

Monitoring Brisbane’s growth for our city under the Brisbane City Plan 2014 and South East Queensland Regional Plan is critical for delivering our city policy and is aligned to the themes of Brisbane Vision 2031

The Regional & Citywide Planning team is responsible for strategic planning policy formulation and legislative review, utilising demographic research and analysis of current and emerging land use trends, including urban growth modelling.  

The Role 

The Principal Research Officer will lead the Research and Modelling unit and manage the delivery of significant urban development research projects for strategic land use and infrastructure planning, inclusive of the award winning ‘Virtual Brisbane’ 3D spatial model which provides visual analysis for locations and specific development proposals and the expansion of regional planning and growth modelling. 

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an urban planning data and modelling specialist to provide technical and strategic advice, insights and recommendations for land use planning across Brisbane. To succeed you will demonstrate: 

  • high level statistical skills, strong strategic and analytical focus to analyse data, developing highly technical reports, recommendations, and strategic planning solutions 
  • understanding and management of land use and development activity datasets / GIS software  
  • demographic research and analysis including land use, housing, employment, urban modelling and assumptions for growth 
  • strategic land use-based policy research, development, and monitoring 
  • excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organisation and with external customers.
