Salary Range: 

Band 5 AUD $98,788 to $111,969 per annum + superannuation

Band 6 AUD $116,089 to $128,453 per annum + superannuation

Band 7 AUD $132,572 to $144,942 per annum + superannuation

(Remuneration stated is for full-time positions and effective from 08 October 2025)

Work type: Multiple positions – temporary full-time (up to 3 years)

Brisbane City Council’s Strategic Planning section is delivering suburban precincts and citywide amendments to support housing, employment and communities across the city. To further this work, we have multiple exciting opportunities in our City Plan Policy and Neighbourhood Planning teams.

Our Business and Branch

City Planning and Design develops strategic planning policy, quality urban design creative outcomes and key legislation including the Brisbane City Plan 2014. Monitoring Brisbane’s growth under the Brisbane City Plan 2014 and South East Queensland Regional Plan is critical for making the future of the city happen, aligned to the themes of Brisbane Vision 2031.

Key Responsibilities (All Roles)

  • prepare strategic land use planning initiatives eg suburban renewal precincts, more homes sooner and strategic review of key City Plan components
  • develop new planning policies and built form/urban design controls
  • consult with stakeholders and communities to shape planning outcomes
  • work collaboratively across Council using a "One Council" approach
  • ensure compliance with relevant planning legislation and policy frameworks.

Principal Urban Planner (Band 7)

  • lead and manage complex planning projects within the City Plan Policy team
  • provide strategic leadership and mentorship to a team
  • communicate technical planning information to stakeholders and the broader community
  • collaborate across Council to deliver strategic review of key planning scheme components
  • interpret and advise on legislation, including the Planning Act 2016 and Brisbane City Plan 2014.

Senior Urban Planner (Band 6)

  • manage and coordinate complex urban planning projects
  • draft planning policies and built form controls
  • undertake strategic land use planning and urban design analysis
  • lead community and stakeholder consultation
  • support the Principal Planner and contribute to project leadership.

Urban Planner (Band 5)

  • provide planning analysis, statutory drafting, and research support
  • assist in preparing precinct plans and planning policies
  • support to senior and junior team members
  • community engagement and report preparation
  • gain hands-on experience in a collaborative, future-focused planning environment.

To be successful you will have:

  • urban planning qualifications and experience relevant to the role level (Band 5 to Band 7)
  • experience in strategic planning, policy writing, or statutory drafting (Senior/Principal roles)
  • strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • knowledge of Queensland’s planning framework (Planning Act 2016, Brisbane City Plan 2014)
  • Principal Urban Planner: demonstrated evidence of capabilities in Council’s Leadership Blueprint.
