RURAL GENERALIST AND GENERAL PRACTITIONER

Alexandra District Health (ADH) is looking for high quality Rural Generalist or Specialist General Practitioner/s (GPs) with advanced rural practice skills to undertake part timework in the Alexandra area for a 12-month fixed term position. We are looking for candidates who enjoy clinical work in the rural sector and want to experience a substantive, employed position. Our long-term vision is to support General Practice and Rural Generalists in Murrundindi Shire.

About the Practicing Location and the Vision:

The hospital, situated in the historic and beautiful town of Alexandra, is surrounded by rolling farmland, and near picturesque Lake Eildon, in Victoria. ADH is suited to becoming a training base for future rural generalists. ADH is seeking high quality candidates who aspire to make this vision a reality, contributing to a community of practice we want to build.

It is a simply stunning setting, combining the attractions of the Lake Eildon, the Goulburn River, fly fishing, mountain biking, camping, boating, views across valleys and the Cathedral Ranges, a destination for climbers.

Surrounded by lush grazing land, farming, hydro-infrastructure, and the timber industry come together making “Alex” a hub of the community.

The hospital and health service are supported by visiting specialists. 

About the applicant:

The suitable candidate will be a Rural Generalist, preferably a rural generalist anaesthetist and Fellow of either the Royal Australian College General Practitioners (FRACGP-rural stream) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM)

Local rural generalists and General Practitioners – who have an existing rural generalist scope of practice or service, involved in or interested in joining a private GP practice in the region are also welcome to apply.

About the offering, work, and workplace:

The offering is a 0.2 EFT appointment during the week with a one in 6 weekend roster. There is no after-hours work and no maternity cover required. The role spans urgent care and ward inpatient cover. Our ADH urgent care service profile includes emergency medicine presentations (paediatrics and adults), general practice urgent and follow-up care, as well as palliative and aged care.

This role includes anaesthesia for a regular general surgical list and pre-admission clinic. For a suitably qualified and experienced applicant the role may also include eye anaesthesia for routine cataract surgery. From time to time anaesthesia cross cover of endoscopy and potentially gynaecology lists may be requested. While conditions of employment are in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Award, 2020, to be competitive with other rural sector employers, and assistance development of its workforce capability, ADH uses the Victorian Public Health Sector - Medical Specialists Enterprise Agreement 2022 – 2026 as the basis for its remuneration, rural incentives, continuing medical education (CME) support and professional governance.

In the public hospital (ADH) setting the doctor will provide service to

  • an Urgent Care Centre and accompanying onsite medical review and pre-anaesthetic clinics, reviewing post-urgent care or perioperative patients who require specific follow-up.
  • support the primary care and community team to provide medical care for patients with complex and chronic health conditions. 
  • ADH inpatients
  • ADH operating theatre patients (if the doctor is suitably qualified and experienced to be eligible for GP-anaesthesia scope of practice)
  • support continuity of care for patients in collaboration with local GP services 

This is a publicly funded hospital position, the doctor will be expected to participate in clinical governance activities, development of local policy, teaching and ultimately, to supervise GP or rural hospitalist trainee and support hospital employed career medical officers. Clinical governance activities include provision of the medical perspective on prioritization of safe patient care and high-quality patient outcomes, morbidity and mortality reviews, and when required, timely contribution to health service reviews under the Statutory Duty of Candour legislation.

Opportunities can be supported for the GP or rural generalist to work with visiting specialists and other health services to develop expertise in subspecialties of interest. For example, assistance with placement or funding application for up-skilling or maintenance of clinical skills.

Alexandra District Health is a 23-bed inpatient service which averages 5 inpatients a day. It has an UCC which sees 3,000 presentations a year. Medical and Surgical specialists visit from Melbourne with the operating theatre running 5 days a fortnight. The anaesthetic service is provided by a lead specialist anaesthetist (FANZCA) and a cohort of GP-Rural Generalist Anaesthetists (DRGA) (03)

There is a collective enthusiasm to revitalize the general practice services available at Alexandra. An opportunity will be provided to link with an established and well-regarded local practice in the Shire and develop a private practice.
