Are you looking for a flexible opportunity to earn extra money and contribute to something meaningful? We're hiring Mobile Field Representatives for the Census Test in Gladstone, Calliope, Tannum Sands and surrounding areas. 

About the Census Test:

The Census is run every five years and is one of the largest collections to count the number of people and houses in Australia. It collects information about where we live, age, our culture, religion, income, education, living and housing arrangements. The information is used to make important decisions, such as government funding, input into policy-making and electoral boundaries.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is conducting a Census Test in August 2025 to ensure we can deliver an effective Census next year. This test requires Mobile Field Representatives in selected areas across Australia.


About the role:

As a Mobile Field Representative (MFR), you will represent the ABS and be its connection to the public. This role is designed to be flexible, mobile and may require travel both within your home state and interstate. You will work a mix of weekdays, evenings and weekends. You may work across a variety of locations providing support to the Field Manager.

In addition to contacting households, dropping off Census forms and encouraging online participation, you will engage with and count private and non-private establishments such as caravan parks and retirement villages.


As a Mobile Field Representative, you will:

  • Promote Census participation and answer questions from the public about the Census.
  • Persuade and influence people to complete their Census form.
  • Deliver Census materials to, and collect census materials from households for secure return to the ABS.
  • Visit households to follow up with residents who have refused or have not successfully completed their Census.
  • Assist with the recruitment and engagement activities of other Census field staff to facilitate Census activities in your area.
  • Conduct assisted interviews with people who request help to complete their Census form.
  • Conduct field work with safety and care and ensure the safety and wellbeing of your team.
  • Use your own electronic device (smart phone or tablet) to record data and work completion.
  • Engage with secure apartment building managers to arrange access to the building.
  • Engage with hotels, hospitals, caravan parks and other non-private dwellings to help them to prepare for the Census.
  • Communicate regularly with the management teams about issues in your work area, and work progress.
  • Complete administration forms and other duties as required.

 

Key Qualities and Experience:

  • Ability and willingness to travel away from home for multiple nights to a range of locations.
  • Experience working within a larger team and following instructions and procedures.
  • Highly organised and strong attention to detail, especially when working in high volume environments with tight deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and relationships based on trust.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, and in isolation.
  • An ability to use electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablets.
  • Aware of personal safety, especially when visiting unfamiliar neighbourhoods or homes.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully and consider different cultural and diverse backgrounds when communicating.
  • Ability to speak another language is desirable but not required.
  • Previous recruitment and/or experience training team members is desirable.
