Title: Part-time Clinical Veterinarian

Location: Abbott Park, IL

Duration: 12 Month Assignment


The primary role of the Clinical Veterinarian is to provide clinical veterinary support to Abbott’s animal care and use program by working under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Expertise in laboratory animal medicine;
  • Expertise in small ruminants;
  • Knowledge of USDA Animal Welfare Regulations and AAALAC International standards;
  • Familiarity with GLP and GMP regulations;
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certified;
  • USDA accredited or obtain within 3 years of hire.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from AVMA accredited or equivalent institution and eligible to be licensed in the State of Illinois;
  • 2-3 years clinical experience in lab animals and/or small ruminants;
  • Practical understanding of local, state, and federal policies regulating the use of animals in research.


Primary Responsibilities:


Veterinary Medical Care:

  • Under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian, support the veterinary care program including ensuring humane care and handling of all animals used in research.
  • Examining, diagnosing, and treating diseases or other health conditions that may develop including health care record management.
  • Assist with managing disease surveillance and preventative medicine programs.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Participation in USDA inspection and AAALAC site visits.
  • Alternate member of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee including protocol review, inspections, policy development and post approval monitoring.
  • Participation in development of veterinary policies for humane animal care and use.
  • Support the Attending Veterinarian, IACUC Chair, and IACUC office with the animal welfare program.

Research & Production Support:

  • Interface and advise internal principal investigators, the IACUC, and animal care staff to ensure the program is within regulatory requirements for the use of animals in research.
  • Assist with new animal model development and oversight of special procedures.
  • Advise investigators on animal biology, animal procedures, and animal models.
  • Advise on literature search for alternatives.
  • Develop and execute species appropriate training for animal care and research staff.
