Role Purpose
Join our team as a Network Software Engineer, where you'll play a key role in designing, customising, and deploying the applications that streamline our network’s operational support systems (OSS). This position is perfect for someone who thrives in an Agile environment and is committed to delivering top-notch software solutions using a blend of custom-built and commercial technologies.
We're looking for a creative problem solver who can merge their network and software engineering skills to address the full spectrum of challenges in software lifecycle, automation, and data analysis. You'll be instrumental in driving real business value across AARNet’s extensive international network that serves the global research and education community.

In this role, your main responsibilities are:
Software Engineering
- Write clean, efficient code and actively participate in code reviews to uphold high standards within the team.
- Deliver solutions using best practices in software development lifecycle management (Automation, Change Control, CICD, DevOps).
- Contribute to the requirements gathering and software design processes across multiple stakeholders and key systems.
- Incorporate data across multiple sources to produce network configurations, feed data analysis services and network management systems.
- Improve and migrate functionality from existing systems to new environments.
- Produce documentation for built solutions.
- Provide support and bugfixes for built solutions.
Relationship Management
- Actively participate in Agile team ceremonies and provide regular progress updates.
- Contribute to assigned software projects from conception to finished product.
- Share knowledge and assist fellow team members.
- Develop skills across products as required to fulfill business requirements.
- Collaborate with a geographically dispersed team, internal and external stakeholders to deliver project outcomes.
- Communicate and work with vendors and other specialist teams as required.

Your experience, skills & qualifications
- Experience as a software developer delivering enterprise projects in a team environment.
- Experience developing solutions in one or more popular languages (such as Python, C, Java, Go, Rust)
- Experience with public or internal Cloud services and delivering orchestrated, containerised application stacks (such as Kubernetes).
- Building data driven applications, integrations and automations - interacting with API’s, compiling and processing common data formats, such as YAML, JSON, XML.
- A working knowledge of database design patterns and experience with one or more popular SQL databases (such as MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
Even Better
Although not essential to the role, it would be even better if you had any of the following experience/skills:
- Experience with microservices patterns and surrounding technologies
- An understanding of IP network technologies, telco environments, device configuration, OSI, SNMP, routing, etc.
- Experience with industry network management, monitoring and telemetry such as Cisco NSO, Netbox, Netconf, Icinga, Grafana and timeseries databases
